The Feast Day of Saint Martin

Today has been the Festa di San Martino, the feast day of Saint Martin, the saint who cut his cloak in half in order to share it with a beggar.

During the course of the day, I encountered several groups of small children dressed in capes and crowns, chanting, banging pans and marching in and out of shops. In Venice, this is the traditional way of celebrating the saint’s feast day. It is also marked by the sale of St Martin-on-horseback shaped biscuits.
