Venice needs Moses more than ever

Acqua alta, Venice
Figures for 2013 reveal that had Moses (or rather MOSE*) been up and running, it would have been called into action a total of six times.

During the course of last year, the level of the sea reached a height of 80 cms on 156 occasions, but on six occasions it rose to a height of 110 cms, which is the point at which the system will be activated.

The highest level recorded was shortly after midnight on February 12th when the sea rose to a whopping 143 cms.

* MOSE (MOdulo Sperimentale Elettromeccanico), is the engineering project currently under construction which is intended to stop the worst of the flooding. MOSE was begun in 2004 and is not expected to be in operation before 2016.
