The Blessing of the Animals

The Blessing of the Animals, San Nicolo dei Tolentini, Venice
This afternoon the campo in front of the church of San Nicolò da Tolentino played host to the annual Benedizzione degli Animali or Blessing of the Animals. About two dozen or so dog owners pitched up with their pets and, not to be left out, the owner of a distinctly harassed-looking female cat.

In the main, the dogs paid no attention to the puss, but one pooch couldn't take his eyes off her.

There was such a cacophony of barking (pussy remained mute) that the priest had to pronounce his blessing with the aid of a loud speaker.

The event was part of the celebrations for the Feast Day of Saint Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals.
