The Oldest Wooden Door in Venice

A few weeks ago the scaffolding finally came down from the Palazzo Soranzo Van Axel to reveal the only surviving medieval timber door in Venice.

The palazzo was built by Nicolo Soranzo in the 1470s, which is also the date of the beautifully carved wooden door.

Almost two hundred years later the palazzo passed, via the Venier and Sanudo, to the Van Axel family, who were rich Flemish merchants. It remained in their possession until 1920.
