Feast of the Rosary

Santa Maria del Rosario, aka the Gesuati, Venice
The church of Santa Maria del Rosario has always been a prominent landmark on the Zattere. The giant rosary now makes it even more so! October 7th is the Feast day (Festa del Rosario) of the Madonna of the Rosary, to whom the church is dedicated.

The Madonna of the Rosary was honoured by the Poveri Gesuati, a religious body set up in Siena in the 14th century (and not to be confused with the Gesuiti). The order was suppressed in 1668 by Pope Clement IX and its property was acquired by the Dominicans.

According to tradition, the idea of the rosary was given to Saint Dominic in 1214, during an apparition of the Virgin Mary.

Santa Maria del Rosario was remodelled by the architect Giorgio Massari between 1725 and 1755.
