A Medieval Love Story

Doge's Palace, or the Palazzo Ducale, Venice

I have long been fascinated by the medieval capitals of the loggia of the Doge's Palace, which sport some of the most beautiful sculptures in Venice.

My favourite capital can be found in the loggia facing the Piazzetta di San Marco and belongs to the column that is slightly wider than the rest.

The capital was carved, in the middle of the 14th century, with eight scenes that trace the trajectory of a love affair that has a rather tragic end.

The story starts with the scene facing the piazzetta and moves counter-clockwise.
