This afternoon, while I was wandering through the deserted back streets of Cannaregio in search of the site of Titian's house, I stumbled across the house of another Venetian painter, one who was actually born in the Serenissima

Although Francesco Lazzaro Guardi (1712-93) is much less well-known than his somewhat older counterpart Antonio Giovanni Canal, he was every inch as good a painter. Both men were celebrated vedutisti, but Guardi's style was much more painterly than Canaletto's, as you can see below.
