The Writing is on the Wall

The Venetians can be a pretty stroppy lot when it comes to spelling and the residents of the sestier (NOT sestiere) of San Polo can be stroppier than most.
They believe, quite rightly in my opinion, that street signs should use Venetian rather than Italian spelling and woe-betide the authorities, if they think otherwise!

A walk through the sestier will reveal many examples of signs where the surplus letters have been blacked out.

The 'corrections' remind me of what used to happen to signs in Wales in the bad old days before Welsh devolution.
